Arctic Expeditions Highlights
Svalbard’s surrounding sea ice hosts around 3,000 polar bears (the Arctic’s most iconic apex predator). Witness massive walrus haul-outs along shallow coastal beaches, and see bearded seals resting on pack ice.
Arctic foxes roam the open tundra, and an abundance of seabirds (including puffins) inhabit the surrounding steep cliffs. Offshore in the Arctic waters, you may also encounter narwhals (the “unicorns of the sea”).
Svalbard’s diverse landscapes combine high mountains, glaciers, and a vast tundra, which comes into full bloom during the summer. Greenland features extensive fjord systems, such as Ilulissat Icefjord and Scoresby Sund.
On Jan Mayen, Beerenberg, the northernmost active volcano in the world, rises above the small, remote island. In Iceland’s Westfjords, dramatic coastlines, glacial valleys, and iconic sites like the Dynjandi Waterfalls define the landscapes.
Discover Svalbard’s polar history, shaped by exploration, mining, and scientific research. Visit Ny-Ålesund, a former mining settlement and modern international research hub. From here, Roald Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth, and Umberto Nobile departed aboard the airship Norge in 1926, flying over the North Pole.
