Poseidon Expeditions - your polar cruise operator

Arctic / Svalbard & NE Greenland National Park

Far above the polar circle, icebergs, ancient glaciers and towering, rock-walled fjords will surpass your imagination, and the “Masters of the Arctic Ice” – polar bears – will appear in all their majesty.

This inaugural voyage aboard the Sea Spirit, round trip from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, provides the rare opportunity to explore Northeast Greenland National Park. Ice permitting, we plan to enter the Kaiser Franz Josef & Kong Oscar Fjords for a close look at these scenic wonders, alive with wildlife during the summer months. We’ll look for musk ox, eider ducks, Arctic foxes, and whales. This is expedition cruising at its very best, considering that East Greenland’s northernmost inhabited settlements are far south of our intended destination.

On the Svalbard portion of trip, we explore the island’s legendary northwestern coast, home to dramatic mountain scenery, tidewater glaciers, rich polar history, and some of the Arctic’s best wildlife viewing: polar bears, walrus, seals, whales, and towering cliffs with thousands of nesting seabirds. Our captain and expedition leader aim to provide the best experience possible, so the routing of your voyage may be reversed, taking into consideration weather and sea conditions.

With a maximum capacity of just 114 passengers, we usually operate with 100 guests off the ship. It maximizes our travelers' time ashore because there is no need for splitting passengers into groups for landing rotations as required on larger ships.

The northwestern part of Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, offers myriad opportunities to view the Arctic’s celebrated wildlife. Our itinerary provides for flexibility, so that we can quickly take advantage of spontaneous opportunities — to pause alongside a pod of feeding whales, or to use our Zodiacs to best view a herd of walrus sunning themselves on a sandbar.

Whether it’s a calving iceberg or the otherworldly hush of a land where man is an infrequent visitor, a Svalbard cruise is one that you’ll remember — and savor — for a lifetime.
